News Gathering

After completing two years of extensive journalism education as well as nearly a full year of being on the Hi’s Eye staff, I have learned the importance of effective news gathering in writing a story. The process of gaining insight from multiple perspectives is vital to the comprehensiveness of an article, and proper reporting can turn a good piece into an exceptional one. Here are two of my stories that demonstrate proper and effective news gathering. ‘It’s almost normal to Juul here’ Teen e-cigarette phenomenon hits high school, home life, parties Greta Frontero, R2 Editor-in-Chief January 8, 2018 A 12th-grade WHS female said she doesn’t bring her Juul to school, but will use someone else’s if the opportunity arises. “If we have a substitute in a certain class or if we aren’t doing anything important, it’s not uncommon for a few of us girls to go and Juul together in the bathroom,” she said. A 12th-grade male at WHS said he Juuls “a few times every day,” adding,

Writing

A good journalism article would be nothing without proper writing. A story cannot captivate readers by merely listing facts or spewing statistics, but by speaking to readers and connecting with them through writing. This not only brings entertainment to the piece, but also humanity and personality that cannot be achieved through a fact sheet. Below are two of my stories that demonstrate my writing proficiency.  ‘Mom… I mean Ms…’ Greta Frontero, R2 Editor-in-Chief October 20, 2017 Typically, students spend the first two months of school getting to know their teachers’ personalities and particular teaching styles. However, some WHS students have known one of their teachers for years. The reason is simple—they live together at home. The WHS community is full of parent-child relationships involving students and teachers, which can be a tricky dynamic to navigate. For example, senior Alex Fonseca had his mother, Ms. Maria Garcia, as his Spanish teacher last year. He sa

Editing & Design

As Editor-in-Chief of the Hi’s Eye , I oversee the editing, layout, and design of each of my team’s publications. Not only do I work side-by-side with reporters to edit and resolve stories, but I also guide page editors through layout crises and determine whether or not a story is cut on deadline. It’s not unlikely to find me in the newsroom until seven or eight o’clock at night, working diligently with reporters and page editors alike in order to turn out a final product on deadline. Below you can find links to five particular editions of the Hi’s Eye that show skill in editing as well as creativity in design. Leadership & Team Building

In January of this year, the Hi’s Eye published an article that I wrote regarding the recent Juul epidemic that appeared to be sweeping the high school social scene. Although we had published a Juul story last year when the epidemic first broke out to explain what exactly these portable, rechargeable, electronic cigarettes actually were, I reported on the ever-growing trend that does not appear to be improving. In fact, I found that teenage Juul use had only grown over time, so I interviewed students--many of whom had been suspending for Juuling in school--as well as teachers, administrators, and doctors to get to the bottom of the issue. The article immediately created buzz in the school, and it was only a matter of time before a representative from Juul's headquarters reached out to me to issue a formal statement. I was getting recognition from both the school and district administration, and eventually I received an email from a local publication asking if they could publish t

Law & Ethics

As a journalist, I am faced with numerous ethical dilemmas that must be reported on, and this year’s Hollywood sexual harassment scandal filled up that category rather tightly. With many famous figures as well as high school students voicing their opinions at once, this issue was tricky to report on. Below you can see a story I wrote about this sexual harassment scandal when it first emerged. I wrote it for the Hi's Eye arts and entertainment issue, the Iris , so I took a different angle. I focused on the ability, or lack thereof, of consumers to separate these harassers’ art from their sexual harassment allegations when it comes to supporting their movies, television shows, etc. Can we separate art from artist? Sexual harassment allegations leave fans with tough questions Greta Frontero, R2 Editor-in-Chief December 1, 2017 In recent weeks, Hollywood has become the hub of intense national controversy. It’s not a movie or a financial scandal that has the nation tal

News Literacy

I attribute much of my journalistic success to the extensive journalism education I received my sophomore and junior year before I was qualified to be on staff, and my proficiency in news literacy is no exception. My ability to find, report, and distribute reliable information is what my honor as a journalist relies on, and I do not take this lightly. Below you can see a never-before-seen opinion piece I wrote on the fake news trend during the 2016 presidential election that was not published in the Hi’s Eye , but that articulates my disdain for fraudulent news media as well as the willingness of the public to accept unreliable sources as fact. Fake news trend spreads nationwide Greta Frontero, R2 Editor-in-Chief December 13, 2016 “Obama Signs Executive Order Banning the Pledge of Allegiance in Schools Nationwide” ― well, no he didn’t. Yet, news site abcnews.com.co has reported this lie as truth. A growing and recent trend of fake news is shaking the world of journa

Entrepreneurship

On the Hi’s Eye staff, we have three business managers who handle our budget as well as subscriptions, fundraisers, and advertisements. Seeing as how we are an entirely student-run, uncensored, independently funded publication, it is up to these business managers to ensure we have enough money to continue publishing the paper. Although these jobs are under the business managers' jurisdiction, there are times in which the entire staff is asked to help out. I have taken part in distributing subscription forms to students and faculty during lunch periods and school events, and I reached out to local businesses in hopes of securing an advertisement. Earlier his year I was in contact with a local cafe called the Juice House as well as the beloved FroYo ice cream shop about potential advertisements.
